A friend’s circle of relatives known as her “Little Dummy” growing up. Name-calling is not humorous to the only derided. Ridiculing word cloaked in a thin veil of “humor” nonetheless hurt. Even if you don’t mean ill, if the person is injured via them, your tongue has end up a detrimental weapon not a life-giving tool.

What power fuels my phrases — the Spirit or evil?

Spirit-filled word

Spirit-filled words provide the strength and knowledge to harness the tongue. The Bible says, “No one can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of lethal poison” (James 3:8).

Self-effort can’t tame the tongue. Neither can precise intentions. We need the strength of God. And we have it!

Ephesians 5:17-20 command us to be constantly filled with the Holy Spirit. Our word reveals who controls our heart. A life filled with the Holy Spirit pours out blessing and thanksgiving. Spirit-filled lips make candy music, instead of noisy gongs.

Jesus stated, “For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. The good man out of his good treasure brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of his evil treasure brings forth what is evil” (Matthew 12:34-35).

“But the Holy Spirit produces this type of fruits in our lives: love, joy, peace, staying power, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).

Present your tongue to God as a tool of righteousness (Romans 6:13). Ask Him to fill you with His Spirit. Practice imparting Him praise and thanksgiving (Psalm 34:1) and watch God infuse your tongue with life-giving power.

Spirit-filled lips bless God and people. Submit your heart to God and hand Him the reins to your tongue.

Evil-fueled word

The Scripture says a tongue not below the control of the Holy Spirit is a stressed evil set on fire by hell and controlled by the evil one (James 3:6).

“The tongue is also a fire, a world of evil among the components of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. … It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:6, 8 NIV).

“But I inform you that every careless word that people communicate, they shall provide an account for it in the day of judgment. And I say to you that each careless word a man shall talk, they shall render account for it in the Day of Judgment. For through your word you will be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned” (Matthew 12:36-37 NASB).

“But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them” (Matthew 15:18 NIV).

“You let your mouth say something evil. Your tongue plans deceit. You sit down and speak towards your brother. You slander your personal mom’s son. When you probably did this stuff, I remained silent. That made you think I was such as you. I will argue my point with you and lay it all out so one can see” (Psalms 50:19-21).

I have a precious friend who radiates Jesus. She has blessed me in many ways along with her prayers, encouragement, and insights from her walk with God. But she’ll inform you she used to have a “potty mouth.” When she gave her heart to Jesus, He transformed not only her heart but additionally her tongue.

The tongue is small but effective. Unbridled it dispenses lethal poison. Bridled through the Holy Spirit it blesses, refreshes, and gives life. Is your tongue heaven’s tool or hell’s weapon? Give your heart and tongue to Jesus today.

“Take control of what I say, O Lord, and shield my lips” (Psalm 141:3).
